講師：Prof. Frédéric Kaplan
Frédéric Kaplan教授は、ローザンヌ工科大学（EPFL）のデジタル・ヒューマニティーズ・チェアを務めている。彼は、5つの研究室から成るEPFLのデジタル・ヒューマニティーズ研究所を主宰しており、また、過去のビッグデータを研究し、初の4次元ミラーワールドを共同で構築する非営利団体 Time Machine Organisationの代表を務めている。
Prof Frédéric Kaplan currently holds the Digital Humanities Chair at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) (https://dhlab.epfl.ch/). He directs the EPFL Digital Humanities Institute (DHI), comprising 5 research laboratories (https://dhi.epfl.ch/). He is also the president of the Time Machine Organisation, a non-profit entity researching Big Data of the Past and collectively building the first 4D mirror world (https://www.timemachine.eu/).

過去に関するデジタル情報はまだ非常に限られている。デジタル化された文化遺産はごく一部である。デジタル化された文書のうち、アクセス可能なものはほんの一部である。これらのデジタル化文書の内容のほとんどは、生きている人間によって読まれたことがない。発見され、可視化され、変換されるのを待っているこの潜在的な情報は、AIアルゴリズムが媒介しないと十分に探索することはできない。それは、歴史のダークマターである。 このダークマターに光を当てることは 、デジタル・ヒューマニティーズだけでなく、社会全体にとって、今後数十年の中核的課題の一つである。
Abstract : Digital information about the past is still very limited. A small percentage of cultural heritage documents has been digitised. Only a portion of the digitised documents are accessible. Most of the content of these digital documents has never been read by any living human beings. This latent information, waiting to be discovered, visualised and transformed, can only be fully exploited with the mediation of AI algorithms. It is the dark matter of history. Bringing this dark matter to light is one of the core challenges of the next decades, not only for the Digital Humanities, but for society as a whole.

Asanobu KITAMOTO earned his Ph.D. in electronic engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1997. He is now Director of Center for Open Data in the Humanities (CODH), Joint Support-Center for Data Science Research (DS), Research Organization of Information and Systems (ROIS), Professor of National Institute of Informatics, and SOKENDAI (The Graduate University for Advanced Studies). His primary technical interest is in image processing and pattern recognition. He also develops data-driven science in various disciplines such as humanities, earth science and environment, and disaster reduction. He is also working on a trans-disciplinary collaboration to promote open science. He has received awards such as Jury Recommended Works (Art Division) from Japan Media Arts Festival, Yamashita SIG Research Award from the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ), Best Paper Award from Jinmoncom Symposium, and Academic Award (Research Paper) from Japan Society for Digital Archive.
